GreenHouse Foundation

The latest season of “The Voice” just wrapped and Cassadee Pope from Team Blake was named the winner.  Cee Lo Green’s team didn’t produce the winner, but Green, who was a former member of Gnarls Barkley, is still a winner.  He apparently takes is last name very seriously because he and sister Shedonna Alexander have founded the GreenHouse Foundation. The GreenHouse Foundation was founded to promote “green” education for disadvantaged children in school districts.  The groundbreaking ceremony was held at Green’s alma mater – Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy.  The students there received a donated greenhouse in which they can grow … Continue reading

I Found My Grandmother!

I have been working on putting together my family tree. This is something I simply don’t have a lot of time to devote to, so I am doing it in small pieces. This week, I decided to see if I could locate information about a family member who meant a lot to me. To my surprise, I found my grandmother! I must admit, I am not an expert genealogist. If I were, I suppose I would have completed most of my family tree by now. Instead, I have scattered notes with scribbled, haphazard, portions of my family tree, and some … Continue reading

My Next Chapter

After my biological parents divorced, my mother’s high school boyfriend came for a visit, proposed, and she married him. I have memories of getting a birthday card from a new grandmother wishing me happy fourth birthday with an elephant beating a drum as I boarded the Amtrak train to Los Angeles, California. My new father and my mother decided to have him adopt me in order to obtain complete custody of me and my sister. Thus I now have birth certificates from two U.S. states. My second father seemed to try harder, and was more consistent. He paid the bills, … Continue reading

Natural Organic First Aid: Omyst

It makes little sense to me to use unnatural or harsh chemicals to treat a boo boo. I always prefer to use natural organic products on my children. I have found that natural methods work better and have more applications. Omyst is one such product that is natural, organic, and can be used for a variety of first aid needs. Omyst was developed by Noreen Mulvanerty, RN, MSN, FNP-BC. Noreen is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Herbalist with over twelve years of Emergency Room experience and an expert on wound care. Who better to develop the first 100% natural organic … Continue reading

Solving A Family Mystery With Kim Cattrall

While I do not have television, I sometimes go online and watch shows that I really want to see. I’ve been looking forward to this season of “Who Do You Think You Are” because one of my favorite actresses, Kim Cattrall, has her own episode this season. Kim is a British-born actress who grew up in Canada. She is best known for her work playing the role of sassy, independent Samantha Jones on Sex and the City. I went online today to watch Kim’s episode of “Who Do You Think You Are” and I’m really glad that I did. In … Continue reading

Found: Another Piece of the Puzzle

One of the things that I like the most about genealogy is that it is like putting together a puzzle. Every piece of information that I learn fits into the bigger picture of who I am and how I came to be. I do not even have to be actively researching to find clues to my past. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple conversation. This past weekend, I took my son to visit my mother and father. We see them about once a month – either they come to our house, or we drive down to see them. It … Continue reading

How My Ancestors Came to America

The other day, as I was taking a walk with my dad and my son, we talked a little bit about family history. I forget exactly how we arrived at the topic, but as we were talking, I found out a little bit about his parents and his grandparents. As a novice genealogy researcher, I realized that although I was interested in obtaining information about my ancestors from my dad, I was not interested in totally grilling him about everything under the sun regarding our heritage. With this in mind, I only talked about it for a little while before … Continue reading

Mystery Solved!

My great grandfather was born to a single mother in 1898. She never disclosed who the father was, or if she did, it was kept secret by anyone who knew. She married a man within a few years of my great grandfather’s birth, and my great grandfather assumed his stepfather’s last name. It is unknown if he was ever officially adopted. I first became aware of my great grandfather’s illegitimate birth when I first began diving into my genealogy. There were a few theories as to who the biological father was: a traveling businessman, a married man, or even a … Continue reading

Lessons Learned – New Health Blogger Intro

As a new health blogger for Families.com I wanted to take some time to introduce myself. Through the years I’ve been a granddaughter, daughter, two times a wife, sister, and a mother—five times over. At this point, my family consists of only my girls and my sister. Everyone else in my family passed on at a young age, even my first husband. I feel that facing so many health-related tragedies is what spurred me on to study many health fields, as well as doing my best to take care of my own health and that of my girls. No matter … Continue reading

New Genealogy Blogger

Hello, my name is Jacky Gamble, and I am a genealogy addict. I am also the newest genealogy blogger at Families.com. I have already posted a couple of blogs here, but before I go any further I should tell you a bit about me, and why I chose to blog about genealogy. Genealogy is one of my passions. I began researching my own family tree back in 2003 because I was curious to find out how many relatives were in my mother’s family (her grandparents had 11 children, and their children had children, and so on). I wasn’t expecting to … Continue reading
